Do eBook Readers Conceal Embarrassing Reading Habits? Survey Reveals Truth

Estimated reading time: 1:10 min.

The English eBook market may not be as advanced as the USA’s, but it’s the most developed within Europe. In recent months, and particularly around Christmas, British publishing houses have reported record sales in the eBook sector. This was reason enough for the English newspaper “Daily Mail” to conduct a survey to find out why people read on eBook readers at all.

However, the survey did not focus on aspects like the lighter weight or the more practical handling, but rather on the feeling of embarrassment among readers. Daily Mail inquired what genres are being read and whether the eBook reader is used to hide this from the public. So the survey falls somewhat into the category of oddities… but let’s take a look at the results.

One third of the respondents (1,863 people) stated that they use the eBook reader to read and conceal erotic literature. An even larger proportion, namely 57 percent of the eBook reader owners surveyed, said that they want to hide the fact that they read children’s books – such as Harry Potter. At 26 percent, relatively few people hide their sci-fi reading habits.

Another survey revealed that 30 percent of British eBook readers are ashamed of their reading habits and do not want to disclose them. 20 percent even said they wouldn’t want to reclaim their eBook reader if it was lost due to the content on the device. Crazy! … Or is it?
