Get the Tolino Shine eReader for 60 Euros at Tchibo.de Before Stock Runs Out

Update: The sales promotion at Tchibo has now ended; however, the first Tolino Shine (as seen in the article image) is currently available for only 88 euros regularly. The (much better!) successor, the Tolino Shine 2 HD, is also on the market and has a regular price of 120 euros. During occasional sales events, the price drops to 100 euros. You can keep an eye on such promotional offers on our Tolino topic page.
Original Report: As we reported a few days ago, Libri is offering the Tolino Shine in collaboration with Tchibo, available now in the online shop. At the time of the original report, the price of the eBook reader was not yet known—not officially, at least. Now, the curtain has been pulled back, and you can look forward to a particularly inexpensive sale of the Tolino device.
For just 69.95 euros, the eReader hits the virtual shelves. This makes the Shine the most affordable illuminated dedicated reading device on the market. Even last year’s price promotions can’t quite compete with this. As is usual in the Tchibo online shop, you can save even more by subscribing to the newsletter. Once that’s done, you receive a 10-euro voucher. This brings the eBook reader down to a total price of around 60 euros.
Supporting Local Booksellers
Libri and Tchibo particularly emphasize the added value for local booksellers. As with the Sony PRS-T3 last year, it’s now also possible with the Tolino Shine to choose a preferred bookseller. If they use a Libri online shop, you can support your trusted local bookseller. If you do this, you also get a free eBook.
“Endgame” by James Frey is credited to your account if you select “meineBUCHhandlung” as your shop. The title usually costs 10 euros. This effectively brings the Tolino Shine down to a record price of 50 euros.
Libri and Tchibo clearly undercut the competition and also outshine other Tolino competitors. Especially as a gift, the Tolino Shine, at this price, will undoubtedly find its way under many Christmas trees. In our recently published Christmas buying guide, it was noted that due to pricing, one might be better off opting for a different device, but with this new bargain price, that may not be the case anymore. For 60 euros, the Shine can be purchased without worry – there’s nothing comparable in this price range.
Overall, the Tolino Shine is a solid device: The E-Ink Pearl screen has a resolution of 1024×758 pixels, touch controls are via an infrared touchscreen, and the 2 GB internal storage can be expanded. Thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi connection, eBooks can be purchased directly on the device and the software includes all important features such as note-taking, font customization, and dictionary function. The latter has the advantage over most other eReaders in that translations are available from and into German (whereas others typically only go into English).
It will be interesting to see how (and if) the competition will react. Particularly, Amazon only offers the basic Kindle in this price range, which sells well, but not as well as its predecessor. The Kindle Paperwhite is already very affordable at 99 euros and is unlikely to be discounted further anytime soon. But competitors like Kobo, PocketBook, and the other Tolino partners (!) cannot keep up here.
If Libri and Tchibo have a sufficiently large stock, then this price promotion could significantly increase the Tolino newcomer’s share within the alliance. If last year’s Sony sales are any indication for the current promotional sale, then it is equally possible that the stock may soon be depleted. Interested parties and bargain hunters might not want to wait too long.
