Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight

Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight

The built-in lighting has a bluish tint, but the Odyssey HD Frontlight was still a pleasant surprise.

At a Glance

The Bookeen HD Frontlight was quite a pleasant surprise when it was released. With its built-in frontlight and page-turn buttons, the French manufacturer delivers a great reading experience. However, the lighting on the Bookeen HD Frontlight has a slight bluish tint. You can also see the LEDs fairly clearly along the bottom edge of the screen. Both of these aspects could be somewhat distracting for some readers.

Another drawback is the less-than-ideal build quality, which we noticed on several devices. Here, the competition definitely has the edge. The same goes for the dictionary and notes functions, as well as font customization. While these features are all present and functional, the range of options offered lags behind. In particular, the dictionary feature falls short when compared to the Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Glo.

Aside from these issues, the Bookeen HD Frontlight is still a good device—it offers excellent readability, is responsive, and with its dedicated page-turn buttons, it really stands out in the field. The built-in Thalia store works well, and the integrated browser allows you to download ePub and ACSM files. This means you can also use other ebook stores directly from the device.

Conclusion: While the Bookeen HD Frontlight can’t quite keep up with the Kobo Glo and Kindle Paperwhite when it comes to software, it still offers more than the Tolino Shine and delivers a solid reading experience.
