7.8-inch display with blue light reduction and open Android: The perfect eReader for tinkerers and individualists?

The InkBook Explore from Arta Tech comes with some highly intriguing features, making it especially appealing for those who find the limited expansion options of a Tolino Epos or PocketBook InkPad 3 insufficient. The Explore eReader offers nearly identical specifications at an attractive price.

InkBook Explore: At a Glance

The InkBook Explore is the fourth and largest eBook reader in Arta Tech’s lineup. With its 7.8-inch E-Ink Carta display boasting 300 ppi and blue light reduction, this device is a direct competitor to top contenders on the market: Tolino Epos and PocketBook InkPad 3.

At the same time, the InkBook Explore stands out by offering an open Android operating system—a special bonus for tinkerers and individualists. This gives you the flexibility to install your own apps and customize the eReader far beyond what’s possible with the competition. Users of eBook flat-rate services such as Skoobe can especially benefit from this software.

However, it’s worth noting that the InkBook Explore runs Android in the now outdated version 4.2.2. While this doesn’t affect most standard functions, you might run into compatibility issues if you want to install newer apps.

The CPU also deserves a mention: the i.MX6SL chip used here is a well-known single-core processor found in other eReaders. While perfectly sufficient for non-Android devices, it can feel a bit sluggish on the InkBook Explore depending on your use case. Some other Android eReaders offer dual- or quad-core CPUs, although these are usually found in the 6-inch segment.

The device makes up for its limited processing power with a generous 1 GB of RAM, ensuring smooth multitasking and handling of large file formats.

The 3,000 mAh battery is said to last up to three weeks—a typical figure for eReaders. However, based on experience, some Android-based models start to run out of steam a bit sooner. The 8 GB of internal storage can be expanded with MicroSD cards.
