Kindle (2022)

Higher resolution, more storage, and audiobook support

“Kindle” isn’t just the name of Amazon’s e-reading service—it’s also the title of the most affordable eBook reader in the retail giant’s lineup. In September 2022, after three years, the model received a major upgrade and was updated with the latest technology. With a 300 ppi pixel density, its resolution is now just as high and the text just as crisp as on the more expensive models. The new Kindle also comes with twice as much storage and supports audiobooks via Audible.

Kindle 2022 REVIEW: The Ultimate Affordable E-Reader?

Kindle (2022): At a Glance

In September 2022, Amazon gave its aging entry-level Kindle a thorough update.

The biggest change is the display, which now has three times as many pixels as before and offers 300 ppi instead of 167 ppi. What does that mean? Text is now razor-sharp, just like on the pricier Kindle models.

It still includes a built-in light, but due to the lower price, unlike the Paperwhite and Oasis, you miss out on adjustable color temperature.

As a “night-friendly” alternative, there is at least a dark mode, which inverts the screen contents – white text on a black background.

Another major addition is audiobook support. This is once again via Audible. Output works over Bluetooth speakers or headphones. To keep audiobook listening from turning into a constant battle for storage space, the capacity has also been doubled to 16 GB.

The charging port is future-proof as well, now using the newer USB-C standard instead of Micro-USB. Starting in fall 2024, USB-C will for new mobile devices be mandatory across the board.

Amazon is also proud to highlight the device’s recycled materials: 75 percent of the plastics used in the black model come from post-consumer waste, and the blue version still manages 30 percent. The magnesium in the device is 90 percent recycled.

All in all, the new Kindle is a welcome update, bringing meaningful improvements to the aging predecessor that collectively enhance the reading experience. If you don’t want to spend too much, the Kindle is definitely worth a look.
