PocketBook InkPad 4

An open premium eReader with powerful features and thoughtful software for discerning readers

The PocketBook InkPad 4 is a high-quality eReader featuring a 7.8-inch E-Ink Carta 1200 display that stands out for its open software, user-friendly operation, and well-thought-out features. With its evenly illuminated frontlight, physical page-turn buttons, 32 GB of storage, built-in speaker, and IPX8 certification, this device is aimed at demanding avid readers who don’t want to be tied to a closed ecosystem. The user interface is thoughtfully designed and highly customizable, the PDF display is versatile, and text-to-speech as well as audiobook functions are included. While the housing creaks slightly when gripped firmly and the price, at around 290 euros, is on the higher side, the overall well-executed design makes the InkPad 4 one of the best eReaders in its size category.

PocketBook InkPad 4 REVIEW: Almost perfect

PocketBook InkPad 4: At a Glance

With the InkPad 4, PocketBook introduces the most refined version of its popular e-reader series to date, while staying true to its core concept: openness, ease of use, and high-quality technology. The 7.8-inch E-Ink Carta 1200 display offers a high pixel density of 300 ppi and delivers crisp, high-contrast text – though on close inspection it doesn’t quite reach the brilliance of Kindle or Kobo. The front light still impresses with even illumination and adjustable color temperature, including a dark mode for eye-friendly reading in the evening.

Visually, the device takes its cues from earlier models, combining elements of the InkPad 3 with the Era. A particular highlight is the flush, flat display glass, which gives the device a modern look without sacrificing the tactile advantages of physical buttons. Navigation via the two page-turn buttons at the bottom is reliable, and despite their low-profile, seamless design they’re still easy to orient by touch. The ability to remap the buttons underscores the high degree of customizability that runs through the entire system.

Overall build quality is solid, although the chassis occasionally creaks under a firmer grip – a minor blemish on an otherwise premium impression. At 265 grams it’s on the heavier side, but that doesn’t detract from comfortable handling. The back is made of textured plastic that provides a good grip, even if it looks a bit less upscale. A clever touch is the magnetic cover connector on the back, which keeps optional cases securely in place while also putting the device into standby.

In terms of features, the InkPad 4 comes well equipped: 32 GB of storage, USB-C, IPX8 certification, and a built-in speaker for audiobooks and text-to-speech make it a versatile companion. There’s no option to expand storage via microSD, but the internal memory should be sufficient for most use cases.

The device really shines on the software side. The interface has been continuously refined over the past few years and now ranks among the best on the market. The home screen is intuitive and customizable, and you can hide distracting shop recommendations. The library view also scores points with thoughtful filtering and sorting, supports both folder structures and Calibre tags, and offers a choice between vertical scrolling or page-by-page browsing.

Within eBooks you can extensively adjust fonts, line spacing, and margins. You can install your own fonts, enter notes via keyboard or finger, and export them as HTML – though handwritten notes unfortunately can’t be exported. The dictionary feature offers an impressive range of languages, although grammatical forms aren’t always recognized reliably. The morphology feature promises improvements, but in practice falls short of expectations.

The InkPad 4 is also flexible when it comes to audio: music, audiobooks, and text-to-speech work over Bluetooth as well as the built-in speaker, which delivers surprisingly decent sound quality. Support for open formats like MP3 rather than exclusive platforms like Audible fits well with the device’s open philosophy. Rounding things out is solid PDF rendering with practical view modes like column view, which is particularly helpful for academic texts.

At around 290 euros, the PocketBook InkPad 4 sits at the upper end of the price range for e-readers of this size, but it delivers a compelling overall package. If you’re looking for an open, versatile, and easy-to-use e-reader that isn’t tied to any ecosystem or proprietary formats, this is one of the best options on the market right now.
