PocketBook InkPad Eo

A color E-Ink tablet running Android, featuring powerful hardware, open software, and a bright Kaleido 3 display

The PocketBook InkPad Eo is a versatile 10.3-inch color E Ink tablet running on Android, impressing with its high-quality build, bright Kaleido 3 color display, and a consistently redesigned user interface. It features solid hardware with an octa-core processor, expandable storage, excellent stylus support, and thoughtfully streamlined software that has been noticeably refined compared to the original Bigme version. While the color reproduction doesn’t quite match the vibrancy of LCDs, it’s perfectly suited for comics, magazines, and note-taking—especially when the bright front light is turned on. Despite minor drawbacks like the non-magnetic stylus holder or the somewhat outdated Android version, the InkPad Eo stands out thanks to regular updates, access to Google Play, and its open system. This makes it an appealing option for anyone seeking a color-capable E Ink device with Android flexibility—valuing privacy, expandability, and a clean, optimized design.

Entering the Color E-Ink Tablet Arena: PocketBook InkPad Eo REVIEW

PocketBook InkPad Eo: At a Glance

With the InkPad Eo, PocketBook is introducing its first 10.3-inch tablet with an E-Ink Kaleido 3 color display, running entirely on Android. Bigme supplies the platform as the OEM manufacturer. The asymmetrical design with a grippy frame makes it comfortable to hold, even if the back doesn’t quite match the rest of the build quality. At around 460 grams, the weight is mid-range for color E-Ink tablets of this size.

Hardware with solid all-round capabilities

The specs leave little to be desired: an octa-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD, ensure smooth performance even with more complex apps. Four microphones, stereo speakers, and a USB-C port including a microSD slot underscore the device’s versatility. The WACOM-powered stylus feels good in the hand and includes an integrated eraser function—however, it isn’t compatible with the usual replacement nibs, which can be a minor drawback if you’re looking for spares.

The fact that the pen doesn’t attach magnetically to the device but is stored in a loop on the optional case is a matter of taste—for heavy users, the safer storage in the case is likely more practical in the long run. If you skip the case, however, everyday pen use can be a bit awkward.

Colors with E-Ink charm – pastel rather than OLED

The Kaleido 3 display offers 300 ppi for grayscale and 150 ppi for color content—a proven approach for color E-Ink. It renders 4,096 colors and is excellent for comics, magazines, or presentation graphics, even if the colors appear more subdued compared to LCDs. The constant presence of the RGB color layer adds a slight dimming—but the front-facing dual-tone light can compensate for that. At 56 nits, the peak brightness is among the highest of comparable models.

The lighting does show a slight brightness gradient, but it barely affects the overall impression. Switching between E-Ink modes—including a particularly fast “Extreme Mode”—adjusts rendering behavior to the task and reliably reduces ghosting. In a pinch, you can even play videos.

Software with handwriting and polish

The Android 11 interface has been noticeably streamlined compared to Bigme’s standard version. PocketBook opts for clearer, monochrome iconography, better-placed navigation elements, and skips half-baked features like Bigme’s own text-to-speech. Even though the security patches aren’t up to date, PocketBook has been delivering monthly software improvements since launch.

The privacy ambitions are high, but implementation isn’t fully consistent yet: some system processes still communicate with servers in China—an area where PocketBook could carve out a true differentiator in the future by switching to European alternatives.

Google Play integration is already in place, letting you easily open up the InkPad Eo to all kinds of apps—including note-taking apps that, thanks to the global handwriting mode, work smoothly with the stylus. The in-house notes app offers various drawing modes, colors, layers, and OCR—the handwriting recognition works reliably and offline. A minor blemish is the poor quality of the built-in templates, which you can sidestep with custom templates.

Reading, annotating, using – with potential to grow

As a reading device, the InkPad Eo plays to its strengths especially with comics, manga, and color PDFs. The PocketBook app offers more options than the preinstalled reader app, including precise zoom behavior for CBR and CBZ files. The device is ideal for PDF annotations: highlights can be saved directly in the document, making it easier to continue working on a PC. In classic PocketBook areas like library sorting or column mode, however, the current software still lags behind—there’s hope that future updates will bring more of PocketBook’s familiar strengths.

Power consumption and runtime in the Kaleido comparison

The 4,000 mAh battery delivers average but solid results in practice. At maximum brightness, consumption is around 11–12% per hour—acceptable given the brightness, which exceeds that of the Boox Note Air 3C. With reduced brightness, you can get up to four extra hours of runtime, making the InkPad Eo slightly more efficient here than comparable competitors.

Conclusion: Versatile color E-Ink with a clear focus on future potential

With the InkPad Eo, PocketBook makes a noteworthy entry into the market for color E-Ink tablets with Android. The combination of mature hardware, thoughtfully refined software, and strong display tech makes the device an attractive choice for users who want color variety and app flexibility—without giving up the E-Ink advantage.

If you’re hoping for deep integration of classic PocketBook e-reader functions, you’ll need a little more patience—but the current development trajectory gives reason to expect quick progress. In any case, the InkPad Eo is a welcome alternative for anyone who wants more than just black and white on paper.
