PocketBook Touch Lux 5

PocketBook Touch Lux 5

A solid 6-inch entry-level e-reader with front light and blue light reduction

The Pocketbook Touch Lux 5 is—as the name suggests—the fifth generation in the Touch Lux eReader series. The latest model stays true to the path set by its predecessors, positioning itself between the Basic Lux 2 (which lacks a touchscreen) and the Touch HD 3 (which features a higher resolution display). This eBook reader stands out thanks to its typically extensive software, its especially lightweight design, and its frontlight with adjustable color temperature. While the display resolution is “only” 212 ppi, that’s generally more than sufficient for reading with standard font sizes. However, you’ll have to do without water protection, a feature sometimes found in the more expensive models.

PocketBook Touch Lux 5: At a Glance

The PocketBook Touch Lux 5 continues PocketBook’s well-known and successful Touch Lux series, now in its fifth generation.

Staying true to the motto “Never change a running system,” the company has made only one major change compared to its predecessor: like most of its competitors, the Touch Lux 5 now features color temperature adjustment.

This means you can adapt the built-in front light’s color, allowing you to reduce the amount of blue light. This improvement is designed not only to make reading at night more comfortable, but also to avoid disturbing your sleep cycle, unlike cooler light.

Other than that, you get the tried and tested technology you’re used to: the 212 ppi display remains unchanged to keep the price down. While a higher resolution of 300 ppi does offer some minor advantages in general, 212 ppi is still more than sufficient for enjoyable reading without any concerns. If you do want a higher resolution, you might want to consider the Tolino Shine 3 or take a look at the PocketBook Touch HD 3.

The particularly low weight is worth a special mention here. At just 155 grams, the Touch Lux 5 is one of the lightest eBook readers currently available. If you like to read for extended periods and don’t want to put your device down, you’ll especially appreciate how light it is.

On the software side, you get PocketBook’s typically extensive features. However, because of the low price, you’ll have to do without the text-to-speech reading function and audiobook playback.

Conclusion

The PocketBook Touch Lux 5 offers a great and affordable entry into digital reading, leaving little to be desired. The relatively lower display resolution is barely noticeable in everyday use.

Still, the Tolino Shine 3 and the Touch HD 3 are worth mentioning as alternatives. The Shine 3 offers a better screen for the same price, but is less well-equipped in terms of software. While the Touch HD 3 costs a bit more, it also delivers a better display and several additional advantages, making it worth a closer look.
