Sony PRS-505

The PRS-505 was the first mainstream eReader available in this country and quickly won the hearts of tech enthusiasts and book lovers alike.

At a Glance

The Sony PRS-505 was the first eBook reader from the Japanese company to make its way to Germany. Previously, the device had already been available in the USA for quite some time. Here in Germany, Thalia took on a pioneering role and was one of the first booksellers to offer an eReader.

The PRS-505 uses E-Ink Vizplex technology, which, by today’s standards, offers rather poor contrast. Back in 2008 and 2009, however, it represented the state of the art and managed to win over many digital reading enthusiasts. But it’s not just the display that feels outdated today—the way you operate the device is also completely different from what we’re used to now.

Instead of using a touchscreen, the front of the Sony PRS-505 is outfitted with numerous buttons, each assigned to a specific action. The device also featured a very high-quality, though not particularly ergonomic, aluminum casing that feels especially cool to the touch and is relatively heavy.

Despite its drawbacks, the PRS-505 remained very popular even after its successor was introduced. The PRS-600 was the first model to include a touchscreen, which made using it considerably more intuitive. However, this also caused a significant drop in contrast, making the screen harder to read.
