Tolino Shine 5: At a Glance
The Tolino Shine 5 is an eReader with a black-and-white display. It uses E Ink Carta 1300, currently the highest-contrast E Ink technology.
The Tolino Shine 5 keeps the compact 6-inch screen size and, like its predecessor, offers a resolution of 300 ppi. This makes all content look very clear and sharp. The front light again allows you to adjust the color temperature, making it very comfortable for evening reading.
Thanks to the screen size and slim bezels, the device’s dimensions remain compact and easy to hold, making it ideal for on-the-go use.
Software und Austattung
The new Shine 5 weighs 173 grams, making it light and comfortable to handle.
It offers 16 GB of storage, enough for a large library of eBooks. And the IPX8 water resistance ensures the eReader can be used around water without worry.
What’s completely new is the software, which now runs on the system of technology partner Rakuten-Kobo. As a result, the user interface differs significantly from all previous Tolino models—a decidedly positive change. Development of Tolino’s software had clearly slowed in recent years, an issue that the operating system switch will likely consign to the past.
The only downside for tinkerers: Android is no longer used as the underlying system, so you can’t install your own apps anymore. Regular users, however, won’t be affected.
Marktdifferenzierung und Mitbewerb
The Tolino Shine 5 not only continues the Shine line into its fifth generation, it also replaces the Page 2 as the affordable entry-level model. This puts it in direct competition with the Kindle and the PocketBook Verse, and overall it offers better value thanks to adjustable color temperature (versus the Kindle) and a higher resolution (versus the Verse).
Compared to the new color eReaders—the Shine Color and Vision Color—the Shine 5 is a conservative but proven alternative for users who can do without color displays.
Zusammenfassung
The Tolino Shine 5 is a logical, consistent evolution of the Shine series.
While the obvious hardware changes are limited compared to the Shine 4, the device takes a big step forward on the software side.
