Amazon.de Expands Installment Payments to Kindle, Fire, and Echo Devices

Estimated reading time: 1:53 min.

In the electronics retail industry, it’s long been common practice to make products temporarily more affordable through installment payment offers. Now, Amazon.de has introduced a similar payment option for selected items in its Kindle, Fire, and Echo portfolios.

Amazon offers five installment payments, which means you pay off the product over five months. Amazon determines which devices are eligible for installment plans. For example, all Fire tablets come with this option, but the basic model of the Kindle eReaders doesn’t have this option—even though the two cheapest Kindle and Fire models both cost around 70 euros.

There are no financing fees or interest charges for the monthly installments. No special registration is required either. However, the payment option is only available to those who have not had any payment issues with Amazon in the past, have set up a payment method, and whose user account has been active for at least one year. Additionally, the residence must be in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, or Switzerland. The remaining balance can be paid in full at any time (but not partially) if desired.

Much like the gift option, the 5-month payment plan can be selected or deselected on the product page or in the shopping cart. You can find the full terms and conditions here.

The fact that Amazon forgoes charging interest and processing fees can make the five-month payment option quite attractive. For instance, if you’re looking to buy an expensive Kindle Oasis 3G, which costs 329.99 euros and could be a significant expense—especially just before Christmas—paying 64 euros each month for five months might be more manageable. The installment option is also available for Kindle Voyage and Kindle Paperwhite:

Purchasing multiple Amazon devices at once is also possible, but the offer is limited to one active participation per device family and customer. Device families include Fire Tablets, Kindle, Amazon Fire TV, and Amazon Echo.

During the holiday season, there will surely be various price promotions for the Amazon device portfolio—at these times it will be interesting to see if the installment payment option is also adjusted accordingly.
