CES 2011: Hanvon WISEreader E920 Unveils Industry-First Color eInk Display and High Resolution
A new day, a new Engadget hands-on review from CES. This time, it’s a short demo of the new Hanvon WISEreader E920. This new eBook reader comes with two major features. The first pleasant surprise is the exceptionally high resolution of the 9.7-inch display, boasting 1600×1200 pixels. For comparison, the Kindle DX also has a 9.7-inch display, but only with a resolution of 1200×824 pixels. This means the E920 offers 200dpi compared to just 150dpi on the Kindle DX, resulting in significantly sharper text display on the E920. The second milestone also pertains to the display: it utilizes eInk technology capable of displaying colors, marking the first time this technology has been concretely announced in a device.
The device is likely to feature a touchscreen that must be operated with a stylus, as well as WiFi and 3G. This isn’t entirely clear yet, because Hanvon attributes these features to an unnamed reader in one of the press releases. However, since the E920 is a high-end reader, we can assume that it was included in the list of features. What is confirmed is the expandable microSD memory card slot with up to 32GB. Hanvon promises a standby time of 15 days and a battery life of 10,000 page turns.
Judging by the images and the video, the contrast and black tones are very good, but the colors seem a bit faint and washed out. This should not be too surprising, as this is the first generation of an eInk display that can display colors. We can thus expect future improvements not only in color depth but also in color reproduction. By the time this happens, CES 2012 will likely be just around the corner.
