CES 2014 E-Ink Innovations: Video Tour of Exciting Displays and Upcoming Technologies

Estimated reading time: 2:23 min.

About a month ago, CES 2014 came to an end. The PocketBook CAD Reader, Sony DPT-S1, and Alcatel Magic Flip eBook Reader were among the more interesting E-Ink devices at the electronics expo. In addition to consumer electronics manufacturers, the company responsible for the technology itself was also present. E-Ink Holdings showcased a variety of devices at their own stand, primarily serving as a display for different E-Ink screens and applications.

In the lead-up to the event, the company tried to build excitement and anticipation: “We’ve even got a few surprises in store for you – but talk is cheap, silence is golden, so you’ll have to wait and see for yourselves,” they posted in December 2013 on their Facebook page.

However, the big surprises didn’t materialize, apart from the massive “Clockone” E-Ink wall clock (see article image). There weren’t any real innovations for the consumer market, but tech enthusiasts might still find the following video walkthrough of the CES 2014 E-Ink portfolio interesting.

So, 2014 is unlikely to bring new display technologies from the leader in the E-paper market, but rather an expansion of E-Ink Carta availability. A new PocketBook eBook Reader is announced for May, which will utilize this screen technology. We’ll have to wait and see if any competing technologies break into the consumer market in 2014.

E Ink Holdings at CES 2014 for the First Time – With Surprises?!

Original report: In recent months, E-Ink Holdings has introduced several new screen technologies for eBook readers, including E-Ink Carta, Mobius, and Fina. However, aside from the Carta technology, there have been no major breakthroughs for consumers. The Aurora and Spectra displays have yet to launch.

The company states that they will attend the CES electronics fair in Las Vegas for the first time next year in January, which will take place from the 7th to the 10th of January 2014.

We’ll be curious to see what surprises the company has in store. With E-Ink Carta, they introduced a great display technology last summer, currently only found in a single device: the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2. Otherwise, there haven’t been any genuine innovations in recent years that have reached the consumer market in large numbers. The colored E-Ink technologies Triton 1 and 2 have also stalled, which is why so far only PocketBook has dared to produce a corresponding eBook reader for the masses with the Color Lux.

But it’s not just E-Ink Holdings stumbling over color ePaper technology; other companies have also failed to successfully complete corresponding developments. Whether the ePaper specialist has succeeded this time, we will soon find out.

However, it’s also quite possible that no new technology will be presented, and CES 2014 will instead be used to showcase new applications for the screens. This approach has been taken in the past as well. We will know more shortly – we’ll keep you updated.
