IFA 2011: Sony Tablet S with Unique Design and Foldable Sony Tablet P Unveiled
Alongside the Sony PRS-T1, a major highlight of Sony’s IFA press conference was a new tablet. The device, named the Sony Tablet S, stands out with its unusual design resembling an airplane wing, while mostly offering familiar tablet technology.
The dual-core Nvidia chipset provides the necessary power, reportedly making it as fast as an iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 10.1. The 1GB of RAM complements the speedy chipset. According to official sources, the battery life is around 8 hours, and Engadget managed to get almost 8 and a half hours in an initial test of a pre-production model. This is a good level, but not quite on par with the two tablets mentioned earlier. The display size is 9.4 inches, with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, and it runs on the Android operating system.
The tablet is already available for pre-order on the Sony website for the end of September in three versions: A 16GB (€479) and 32GB (€579) WiFi version and a 16GB 3G version (€599).
In addition to the Tablet S, Sony also introduced a second device with an unusual design: the Sony Tablet P. It’s essentially a foldable tablet. It features two 5.5-inch displays with resolutions of 1024×480 pixels. Otherwise, its technical specs largely match those of the Sony Tablet S, except for the significantly smaller internal storage of 4GB. The RAM size is unclear as it’s listed as 512MB in one place and 1GB in another on the Sony website. The device will be available in one version (including UMTS) from October, priced at €599.
Both tablets offer a PlayStation game store, as well as the same Sony Book Store that will be available on the Sony PRS-T1.
