ImCoSys12: The High-Resolution eBook Reader with 1024×758 eInk Pearl Display and IR Touchscreen Now Available [Update]

Estimated reading time: 1:47 min.

We almost missed it, the ImCoSys12 eBook Reader. Introduced in early May, this device with the not-so-catchy name offers impressive technology: An eInk Pearl display with a resolution of 1024×758 pixels. This makes the ImCoSys12 the first eBook reader with a high-resolution (almost) XGA display and an infrared touchscreen.

With “only” 758 pixels in width, the resolution is rather unusual – perhaps it’s a mistake in the press release. We hope to find out more about this soon. Ultimately, it doesn’t make much of a difference, as the missing 10 pixels probably won’t significantly impact the reading experience.

In addition to the high-resolution display, the reader features a generously sized internal storage of 8GB, which can be expanded with a MicroSD card. An 800 MHz processor powers the device, which runs on a Linux operating system; you can access the internet via Wi-Fi. The format support doesn’t hold any big surprises: EPUB, Adobe DRM, TXT, PDF, MP3, JPG, BMP, and PNG. MP3 files can be played through headphones via a 3.5mm audio jack.

Overall, the technical specifications sound really promising, but there’s a small drawback: The device currently seems to be available only in Switzerland. There, it can be purchased for 169 Swiss Francs (approximately 140 Euros). Availability in Germany and Austria is still unknown. We also don’t know the dimensions or weight of the reader yet. So there are still a few questions left unanswered.

If ImCoSys manages the distribution of the device, or if interested parties for rebranding are found, we could soon have another great alternative available in the eBook reader market.

[UPDATE]

In the meantime, we’ve received a response to our questions from ImCoSys! The resolution of 1024×758 pixels is correct – it is not a mistake in the press release. The ImCoSys12 is available for purchase directly from ImCoSys and is in stock. It is also possible to buy the device from Germany and Austria; however, customs duties and shipping costs will apply. Direct distribution in Germany and Austria is fundamentally possible. ImCoSys is already in negotiations with potential distribution partners.

The dimensions of the device are 171x125x10.9 mm, with a weight of 235 grams.
