Onyx Boox i62HD Firefly Launches in Europe on November 9 with Wide Format Support and Front Lighting
Yesterday, I reported that in addition to the Kobo Glo, Kindle Paperwhite, and Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD, a third illuminated eBook reader will be coming to Europe. This is the Onyx Boox i62HD Firefly. Behind the lengthy name is a 6-inch eBook reader with built-in front lighting and a high-resolution XGA screen with a resolution of 1024×758 pixels.
Unlike the other three devices, the Onyx Reader can’t boast a low entry price through subsidization by an eBook retailer, as the device will cost a hefty 199 euros. The other three eBook readers are about 70 euros cheaper. However, the i62HD Firefly comes with a cover, a memory card, and a charger included. The question arises whether it might be smarter to offer the additional package as an optional extra, making the device a bit more competitively priced.
The biggest advantage of the i62HD is likely its wide format support. Not too long ago, I tested the Icarus eXceL, which is a newly branded Onyx Boox M92. Judging by the following video, it seems to use the same operating system. The technical specifications otherwise read very well. Infrared technology is used for the touchscreen, and the internal memory is generously sized at 8GB, which can be expanded with a MicroSD card if needed.
Additionally, the i62HD Firefly will also feature audio support, which has become quite rare these days. Another small peculiarity for a touchscreen reader is the page-turn buttons placed on the sides. However, the device is relatively heavy, weighing in at 250 grams; the Cybook Odyssey HD and Kobo Glo weigh in at 180 and 185 grams, respectively. The dimensions are 171 x 124.8 x 10.9 mm.
