PocketBook InkPad Eo Review: 10.3-Inch Digital Notebook with Kaleido 3 Color E-Ink and WACOM Technology

Estimated reading time: 4:36 min.

After PocketBook unveiled the Era Color a few weeks ago, today the InkPad Eo has made its debut, offering a few unexpected features.

With this new device, PocketBook is introducing its second digital notebook following the InkPad X Pro—whose release in Germany was postponed at the last minute.

E-Ink Kaleido 3 Color Technology

PocketBook Eo with Kaleido 3 and stylus input

The highlight of the InkPad Eo is its E-Ink Kaleido 3 display. This is the same display technology featured in the PocketBook InkPad Color 3, and it is soon to appear in the Era Color as well. As recently reported, Kobo devices equipped with this technology are also on the horizon, and Tolino is likely not far behind.

In short, the E-Ink market is experiencing more momentum than it has in quite some time.

Returning to the PocketBook InkPad Eo: It comes with a 10.3-inch display offering 300 ppi for black and white content and 150 ppi for color. This same 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 screen is also used in other devices from Chinese manufacturers, such as the Boox Note Air 3C and the Boox Tab Ultra C Pro, and it has already made a positive impression with its display quality. Unsurprisingly, the InkPad Eo is also equipped with a built-in front light featuring a nightlight function.

The difference in resolution is due to the RGB color filter applied over the traditional E-Ink screen. By dimming the E-Ink display beneath the RGB filter, up to 4,096 colors can be rendered. You can find a detailed discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this technology in the PocketBook InkPad Color 3 review.

In summary: While E-Ink Kaleido 3 still requires a few compromises, it is an impressive display technology that greatly enhances the E-Ink reading experience.

Android 11 with More Capabilities

A welcome surprise is the device’s use of Android 11, since the InkPad X Pro was still running the much older Android 8. As a result, users can look forward to somewhat improved app compatibility on the InkPad Eo.

The user interface can only be glimpsed in the official video (see below), but it is already apparent that updates have been made for a more modern appearance compared to the InkPad X Pro.

Whether the PocketBook InkPad Eo can compete with the increasingly user-friendly PocketBook e-readers that do not use Android remains to be seen.

Extensive Features

With WACOM touchscreen for note-taking

No high-quality digital notebook should be without a WACOM touchscreen, and the PocketBook InkPad Eo is no exception. It supports low-latency stylus input to make note-taking feel natural. Although the exact latency is not yet known, based on past experience, it can be expected to range between 20 and 30 ms.

An octa-core processor combined with 4 GB of RAM should provide ample computing power, while a 4,000 mAh battery promises sufficient battery life.

The device also includes 64 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a MicroSD card. Audio can be played through Bluetooth or the built-in stereo speakers. While the press release does not explicitly mention microphones, the product images strongly suggest that built-in microphones are present.

There is also a rear camera, which—unlike those on the Boox Tab E-Notes—is conveniently flush with the device and should not interfere with writing.

Google Play support is not specifically confirmed yet; however, since Android (not just AOSP) is mentioned, it is reasonable to expect that it will be included here as it was with the InkPad X Pro.

With dimensions of 226 x 191 x 7 mm and a weight of 470 grams, the InkPad Eo sits in the upper mid-range for its segment.

Price, Availability, and Assessment

The PocketBook InkPad Eo is the first 10.3-inch E-Ink Kaleido 3 notebook from a European provider

The PocketBook InkPad Eo will be available from mid-May at a recommended retail price of 569 euros, and it can already be pre-ordered on PocketBook.de.

Those who are eager to purchase can currently save 56.90 euros (10 percent) using the “allesebook” discount code (see below), though I definitely recommend waiting for the first reviews before buying.

As far as hardware is concerned, I have no doubt that the InkPad Eo is a solid device. It closely resembles the Bigme InkNote, which I had the opportunity to test for several weeks (a big thank you to our forum user “Friday” for the loan at this point!) and which also impressed me with its hardware quality.

The main question mark lies in the user interface. While I now confidently recommend PocketBook e-readers with the familiar PocketBook interface due to the excellent optimization work accomplished in recent years, digital notebooks running Android remain a far more challenging proposition, regardless of brand. After all, Android is not designed specifically for E-Ink devices, and using it inevitably involves one or more compromises depending on the manufacturer.

We will therefore have to wait until mid-May to discover what kind of compromises the InkPad Eo will require—and to assess who will get the most benefit from the device. A review of the digital notebook will be provided here as soon as it becomes available.

One major advantage I would like to highlight is that, with PocketBook, a European provider (excluding resellers) is, for the first time, offering such a device (10.3-inch Kaleido 3 with WACOM and Android 11) directly in this market. This should make warranty handling and general support much easier compared to companies offering similar devices from abroad.
