PocketBook Touch HD 3 Firmware 6.0 Update: Enhanced Interface and Improved Shop Integration

As previously reported, PocketBook has recently completed a comprehensive modernization of its proprietary online store in Germany. This renewed platform serves as the foundation for the new Firmware Update 6.0 for the PocketBook Touch HD 3, which was released just a few days ago. The update introduces a broad array of enhancements, including both functional and visual improvements.
New Home Screen and Improved Application Overview
The most noticeable change becomes evident immediately after installing the update: the home screen now features a new tile-based layout. Your most recent activity (such as the latest books accessed or the last book you read) is prominently displayed, accompanied by three additional book covers. This view can now be browsed as a whole across two additional screens, providing quick access to numerous eBooks (a total of 2 x 15 titles are visible).
This update is a direct result of the aforementioned integration of the eBook store. Not only has the store been redesigned for desktop PCs, but the e-reader itself now benefits from a much deeper level of integration than before.
For devices not purchased through a bookstore, a bestseller list from the connected store now appears below the main book list. This applies only to devices not acquired locally. For instance, my test device is linked to an Austrian Buchmedia eBook store, which does not provide these book recommendations. Users who purchased their e-reader without such store linkage can choose whether to display or hide book recommendations.
The five shortcuts on the home screen can now be easily customized. By pressing and holding a shortcut, you can remove it or replace it with another app. The icons have also been visually refreshed and subtly refined.
Another improvement is found in the application overview, which is now organized into three categories (General, Games, Services).
New Authorization System and Improved Shop Integration
Firmware 6.0 brings not only visual upgrades, but also numerous functional enhancements. Among these is a new authorization system that enables a single account to be used for the store, PocketBook Cloud, and PocketBook apps and services. Logging in to the store now also registers you for the PocketBook Cloud (by simply checking a box and agreeing) as well as for Adobe DRM. This simplifies the initial setup considerably, particularly for newcomers.
Regarding the initial setup: this process has also been redesigned to be more user-friendly and less technical. Brief explanations are offered to help users better understand each step.
The improved store integration is now apparent not only in the recommended books displayed on the home page, but also within the store application itself. The problematic Bookland shop (previously used for devices not purchased locally) has finally been replaced. If your Touch HD 3 was purchased from a local bookstore, there will be no change in this respect for now.
Bookmarks and notes are now also synchronized with the PocketBook Cloud.
EPUB 3 Support
With the update to Adobe RMSDK Version 11, support for EPUB 3 files has been introduced. This format aims to enhance interactivity in digital books, such as enabling the integration of audio files into e-books.
Although this standard was developed several years ago, it has not yet achieved widespread adoption. It remains to be seen whether broader device compatibility will encourage greater use of the format.
Overall, the new firmware is a successful update—especially for those who buy their devices directly, as the improved store integration is a significant step forward. It raises the question—as we wondered yesterday—of why PocketBook took so long to implement these changes.
More e-Readers to Follow
The PocketBook Touch HD 3 is the first e-reader to receive Firmware 6.0, but additional models will follow soon. PocketBook specifically mentions the Touch Lux 4 and the InkPad 3 Pro, while summarizing other upcoming updates. It is expected that the entire current generation of devices will be updated as soon as possible. PocketBook is also known for commendably providing updates (though occasionally with delays) for older models.
