PocketBook Verse and Verse Pro Unveiled as Successors to Touch Series at IFA 2023

Estimated reading time: 3:38 min.

It was only a matter of time, and now it’s happening at IFA 2023: PocketBook is unveiling two new 6-inch e-readers that will succeed the Touch Lux 5 and Touch HD 3. The only surprise is a change in naming, as the new models debut under new titles: PocketBook Verse and PocketBook Verse Pro.

This change is logical, as the previous names—“Touch(screen) Lux(‘lighting’)” and “Touch(screen) HD(resolution)”—have designated features that, for several generations, have also applied to other models in the product line and no longer served to distinguish unique characteristics.

PocketBook Verse: Successor to Touch Lux 5

The PocketBook Verse is the more affordable option of the two models, retailing at 129 euros RRP.

It comes with a 6-inch E-Ink Carta display offering a resolution of 212 ppi. As is now standard for PocketBook, both the front light’s brightness and color temperature are adjustable.

The internal storage of 8 GB can be expanded by up to 128 GB with a MicroSD card. However, this means giving up built-in water protection.

With measurements of 156 x 108 x 7.6 mm, the e-reader is slightly more compact than its predecessor. While the 182-gram weight maintains a reasonable level, it is no longer considered ultra-light, as it is 27 grams heavier than the Touch Lux 5.

The most notable updates from the previous model are the redesigned look and the inclusion of a new USB-C port.

The PocketBook Verse aesthetically aligns with the design introduced by the Era, bearing a strong resemblance to a smaller InkPad 4 or InkPad Color 2. As is characteristic of PocketBook, the four customizable buttons beneath the display are still present.

This e-reader is powered by a dual-core processor supported by 512 MB of RAM, running on Linux as its operating system. There is no audio support. The device maintains a generous 1,500 mAh battery, and thanks to an integrated gyroscope, the display orientation shifts automatically without user intervention.

PocketBook Verse Pro: Successor to Touch HD 3

The PocketBook Verse Pro is the more expensive of the two new models, with a recommended retail price of 169 euros.

The principal difference compared to the less expensive Verse lies in its display: While it also features a 6-inch diagonal, it offers a high-definition 300 ppi “Retina” resolution. E-Ink Carta technology is employed here as well, and, as expected, the front light’s brightness and color temperature are adjustable.

The Verse Pro may have a flat display front. Although this is not apparent from the renderings, it was referenced in leaked FCC documents. Nevertheless, it is possible PocketBook decided against this design before launch. The slightly higher weight (see below) might suggest the absence of a flat front. Conversely, the small weight difference could indicate that the Verse also features a flat front. More will become clear when the device can be tested.

With the inclusion of IPX8 water protection comes the trade-off of losing support for expandable storage. However, this is offset by the 16 GB of internal storage, which is double that of the regular Verse.

Additionally, the Pro model offers audio support via Bluetooth. While there is no built-in speaker as seen in the Era and InkPad 4, users can listen to audiobooks, music, and utilize text-to-speech functionality with compatible external Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

The dimensions match those of the Verse at 156 x 108 x 7.6 mm, with the weight only marginally higher at 186 grams. The processor, RAM, gyroscope, Linux operating system, and battery capacity are identical. USB-C is, of course, the connector of choice here as well.

Careful Model Updates

Both models represent very careful updates, primarily intended to bring the Lux and HD series up to date by incorporating USB-C and unifying the design language with the rest of PocketBook’s current lineup.

For current owners of the Touch HD 3 and Touch Lux 5, upgrading to the new versions is likely only worthwhile if USB-C is essential or if your existing e-reader has failed. I will explore this further in the upcoming review when the devices become available.

While E-Ink Carta 1200 is not mentioned, both Verse models will include the newly implemented Dark Mode, which allows for inverted screen colors. Otherwise, both devices offer the familiar, extensive, and intuitive PocketBook functionality.
