Polaroid PER-900 eBook Reader Falls Short: Rebranded Devices Disappoint

Estimated reading time: 1:01 min.

A few days ago, we reported that Polaroid was likely to present several eBook readers (with color displays) at the CES. The trigger for this speculation was an advertisement captured in a photo.

However, it turns out that the anticipation for a new contender in the eBook market was unfounded. Polaroid does not manufacture devices but seems to be rebranding some well-known devices under its name. The best comparison might be the TrekStor eBook Reader 3.0:

When you look at the user interface of the device pictured above, you can’t help but notice that it is the same interface as the Weltbild eBook Reader 3.0. This is because the device is apparently produced by the same manufacturer.

The device, named the Polaroid PER-900 (see image), does have a 9-inch screen, unlike the Weltbild Reader, which only has a 7-inch screen. Otherwise, the technical specifications seem to be identical: TFT-LCD screen, no Wi-Fi, no touchscreen, 2GB of internal storage. But the 7-inch version will also be available.

Unfortunately, the other devices are not worth mentioning either. They are without exception merely rebranded devices—aside from the two mentioned models, they mostly come with the Android operating system.

So, we don’t need to wait for a Polaroid eBook reader, unfortunately.
