PocketBook at a glance
PocketBook has been active in the eBook reader market for many years. Originally a Ukrainian company, it’s now well established internationally, with development carried out in several countries. In Germany, PocketBook was long considered an insider tip for discerning tech fans looking to get the most for their money. In recent years, though, the company has moved more and more toward the mainstream and is now an established fixture in the German eReader lineup.
Before the Mayersche and Osiandersche bookstores joined the Tolino alliance, they sold PocketBook eReaders under their own branding. This continued across several device generations.
Software updates for the mainstream market
In our first test many years ago, the PocketBook Touch 622 earned “only” a good rating due to a few usability quirks. PocketBook eventually addressed these quirks with a software update that brought several improvements. The PocketBook Touch Lux, the first model with a front light, followed and immediately claimed a top spot in our rankings.
In February 2014, the PocketBook Touch Lux 2 was introduced, which at first glance hardly differed from its predecessor, but it came with a greatly improved front light that delivered an exceptionally good contrast ratio. The Lux 3 model continued the series successfully and also came standard with the new, completely redesigned user interface that PocketBook had already introduced with the launch of other models (Ultra & Sense).
Focus on software
This new user interface improved both the arrangement of the controls and the overall look of the system. In the end, it brought PocketBook very close to its main competitors from Amazon, Tolino, and Kobo.
This user interface (UI), after further revisions and refinements, is still in use today.
Apart from that, in recent years PocketBook has also focused on an improved, integrated shop experience and on related cloud solutions.
