Tolino Vision vs. Kindle Paperwhite 2: eBook Reader Hardware Comparison [Video Review]

Estimated reading time: 1:31 min.

The Tolino Vision hit the market on Saturday, and quite a few interested buyers are wondering how the new device compares to the Kindle Paperwhite 2. That’s why I put both competitors side by side in an initial video comparison, focusing mainly on the hardware. Another video, concentrating on the software of the two eBook readers, will follow in the coming days.

Successful Debut of the Tolino Vision

The first impression of the Tolino Vision is very positive. The eBook reader is excellently crafted, feels appealing to the touch, and sits comfortably in the hand. The screen, as expected, is highly readable but slightly falls behind the Kindle Paperwhite, whose screen background is a bit brighter. However, the difference is so minor that it’s hardly noticeable in the video. Even in person, it’s only visible in a direct comparison, putting both devices on an equal footing. Compared to the Tolino Shine, the Vision’s screen background is, as anticipated, noticeably brighter.

The advantage for the Kindle Paperwhite becomes a bit more significant in complete darkness with the lighting on. The Amazon eBook reader offers more even illumination, mainly due to the brightness gradient on the Tolino Vision’s lower screen edge. Apart from this, the new Tolino eReader also provides uniform lighting. In terms of contrast ratio, the Vision slightly falls behind, but, similar to the screen background (as noted above), this is not a significant drawback.

All in all, the debut of the Tolino Vision is undoubtedly a success, and the gap between Tolino and Amazon has noticeably narrowed. Choosing the Tolino Vision in terms of hardware is hardly a mistake. The E-Ink Carta screen is worth its price compared to the Tolino Shine, in my opinion.
