Bookeen Cybook Odyssey: Beta Access to New Firmware for Enhanced Features

Estimated reading time: 1:36 min.

In recent weeks, it has become very quiet again around the French eBook reader specialist Bookeen. The Bookeen Cybook Ocean was actually supposed to be released by June after several postponements, but that deadline has also passed without the 8-inch eBook reader hitting the market. A timely market launch would be crucial, as the PocketBook InkPad, a competitor that will give the French company some fierce competition, is set to launch soon (unless it faces another delay).

The PocketBook competitor can boast not only the typically extensive range of features but also a significantly higher resolution display. The InkPad offers a resolution of 1600×1200 pixels, whereas the Bookeen Ocean tops out at only 1024×768 pixels. Despite this, the PocketBook device is priced at just 189 euros, only 10 euros more than Bookeen’s 8-inch model.

Apparently, older models are also being updated

Even though the Ocean is delayed yet again, Bookeen is apparently working diligently behind the scenes in other areas. The company is inviting users to participate in a closed beta test for new firmware announced on its official blog. Owners of a Bookeen Cybook Odyssey can apply for the beta test and gain early access to new features that will also be integrated into the improved software for the Cybook Ocean.

To apply, you need to log in to your Bookeen customer account here and submit a ticket with the serial number. However, the final decision on beta test acceptance rests with Bookeen. They likely want to cover the widest possible range of devices of different ages from various batches to quickly identify any issues. Kobo owners, unfortunately, are well aware that software problems can arise due to different production dates.

Participation is only recommended for those with a second reading device available in case the beta software causes problems. However, for tinkerers, it’s a great opportunity to play around with an eReader that perhaps has already found its way to the shelf.
