Firmware 1.7.2 Update Brings Improved Icons and Bug Fixes to Tolino Shine 1, Vision 1 & 2

Estimated reading time: 2:02 min.

For the past few weeks, the two newest Tolino additions, the Vision 3 HD and Shine 2 HD, have been available in stores. As noted in the review of the new Shine model, the devices come with a new firmware version.

The software, marked with version 1.7.2, primarily offers changes “under the hood.” Unfortunately, feature enhancements are somewhat limited, but the program icons now use a vector font. The previously used pixel graphics are a thing of the past. This change was primarily necessary due to the much higher pixel density of the new “Retina” models. The icons in the new firmware are noticeably sharper, giving the user interface a more refined feel.

Older Models Up to Date

For a few days now, the new software has also been available for download for previous Tolino devices. The first Tolino Shine receives firmware 1.7.2, as do Tolino Vision 1 and 2. Although older eBook readers don’t benefit as much from the vector graphics due to the lower pixel density (212 ppi), the improved edge sharpness is nonetheless noticeable.

The Tolino alliance specifies the change log for the update as follows:

After updating to version 1.7.2, the following features and improvements will be available:

  • New, clearer icons
  • Improved protection against deletion: An additional warning appears before deleting eBooks from the Tolino Cloud
  • Improved Adobe ID management for users of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
  • Connecting and recognizing a USB connection to a PC has been improved for some devices
  • Messages referring to unsupported file formats can now be turned off for each eBook
  • Bug fixes and various improvements

As usual, the update can be installed over-the-air (OTA). When the eReader is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, the update will be automatically detected. If that is not the case, you can also manually search for the update in the settings (under device information). Alternatively, the firmware can also be downloaded manually (currently only for the Vision 2).

Still Room for Improvement

Even if the changes in the new software are limited, it is good to see that even the first Tolino Shine (approaching its third anniversary) is still receiving updates.

It remains to be hoped that the software will also be expanded in terms of features. Although most of the important functions are now on board, a direct comparison with Amazon, Kobo, and PocketBook shows that there is still room for improvement (dictionary function, vocabulary trainer, library …). Nevertheless, Tolino eBook Readers can now boast the best web browser.
