PocketBook Ultra Software Update: Enhanced User Interface and Bug Fixes Announced
The PocketBook Ultra hasn’t even hit the German market yet—except for a few rare exceptions—and there’s already a software update (version 5.1). As recently reported, the launch in Germany and Europe is expected to be delayed by approximately three weeks, which means the Ultra will only be available at the end of July or the beginning of August.
Officially, reasons for the delay were not initially provided, but a PocketBook representative later mentioned that there would be bug fixes in the meantime. Whether these are just software improvements or include hardware focus as well remains unclear. One of the first delivered devices—later revealed to be a pre-production model—had issues with lighting and workmanship.
Bug Fixes and Improvements
In any case, the recent software update shows that PocketBook is apparently working intensively to resolve existing issues, and hopefully, the soon-to-happen (rescheduled) market launch can proceed as planned. The update not only includes some bug fixes but also various enhancements, such as the option for hyphenation in ePub files or a few camera improvements.
It is clear that PocketBook should manage the launch of the high-priced device smoothly, as the distinct price premium over the E-Ink Carta competition undoubtedly raises buyers’ expectations.
The work on the software is especially needed because the eBook Reader has a newly designed user interface. Unlike the other available PocketBook devices, this interface is not only supposed to be more visually appealing but also more intuitive to use. Touch Lux and Touch Lux 2 are expected to receive the corresponding update to the new interface, probably in August.
In the meantime, both pre-order customers waiting for the PocketBook Ultra and those expecting the software update for their older illuminated eReader can study the User Guide of the Ultra. It describes all the features of the new user interface, allowing users to get a good impression in advance of what to expect.
